For example: A salesperson might lose out on an important deal because he doesn’t understand how much his product costs per unit; instead of getting angry at him or firing him outright (which would only reinforce his sense of failure), talk with him about why he didn’t know how much each unit costs and how it affects his price point. Then help him develop strategies for making sure that doesn’t happen again (e.g., by setting up regular meetings between salespeople).
