Putting One Foot in Front of the Other

February 18, 20242 min read

Hi Friends,

Six years ago, I traveled back and forth from Arizona to Washington to be with my Dad in the hospital. He was fighting multiple myeloma, and it was brutal watching his last days. I spent hours on top of hours at the hospital with him. The stress was starting to get to me watching my hero suffer. I started walking outside the hospital when he was sleeping to clear my mind. This is where it all started for me—I found that when I finished my walks, I was in a much better mental and emotional state. Not only did I need it, but my Dad was counting on me to be strong for him. After my walks, I was in a much better state to handle the ups and downs in his hospital room. Let me tell you, it was one hell of a rollercoaster. Yes, my father soon after went on to heaven, but not before I installed the habit of daily walking.

Six years later, I’m still walking. What started as a way to get fresh air and clear my mind has turned into me walking around 5 miles every day. The reason I share this with you is because I have discovered through research that walking daily has incredible benefits for all of us.

Here’s a list of a few of the benefits:

  • Walking about 30 minutes per day can fight off 50% of all fatality-type diseases.

  • Reduces stress—I found this to be true for me.

  • Improves heart health.

  • Increases longevity.

  • Improves mood—sometimes 5 miles isn't enough for me!

  • Burns calories.

  • Boosts brain power.

  • Stimulates digestion—some studies say walking after eating can aid in digestion and lower blood sugar.

For me, these are all great reasons to put one foot in front of the other. I’m sure there are many other benefits, like improving sleep, but I will leave it up to you to do your research.

That’s it for now—hopefully, I will see you out in the neighborhoods putting one foot in front of the other.

Let’s Climb!!!
